Take Control of your Health
For a long time, we have been conditioned to relinquish responsibility for our health to others. We have become accustomed as a society to expecting “a pill for every ill’. This is the road to health disaster because, like it or not, we are all responsible for the condition we find ourselves in.
Taking a pill to squash symptoms and neglecting to treat causes is like putting sticky plaster over the warning light in your car. You no longer see the flashing light but you do nothing to arrest the trouble festering away under the bonnet. Many people are fooled into thinking that drugs address the underlying causes of a conditional and will effect a cure. This is untrue and dishonest. At best, they temporarily relieve pain and postpone the day when organ failure results.
How do we define health for a human being? Is it simply absence of symptoms or the quality of vitality that enables us to fulfil our potential? Over the years, I have observed that people who take care of their physical and spiritual health do much better in the long run than those who don’t. What are the successful actions that are more likely to keep you chasing hobbies rather than prescriptions in your later years? Here are a few suggestions based on clinical observations and published research:
STOP EATING:
Processed chemical-laden convenience foods.
Gluten grains which are highly inflammatory.
Commercial cows’ dairy - a growth factor.
Refined sugars - an addictive anti-nutrient.
Unhealthy trans-fats - in processed foods.
START EATING:
Real, quality foods cooked from scratch.
Way more vegetables - of different colours.
Seasonal fruits - fewer than your vegetables.
Healthy fats - coconut, avocado, flax, omega oils etc.
Quality proteins - grass-fed beef, organic eggs, wild fish and others.
Healthy carbs - root vegetables, safe pseudo grains (coconut, linseed, buckwheat flours etc.), wild rice.
LIFESTYLE CHOICES:
Think for yourself! Do your own research, gather your own knowledge and have the courage to make your own decisions. Don’t compromise your integrity.
Get quality sleep - if poor, work on improving this!
Reduce radiation exposure in the home.
Attend to your infections - both acute and chronic.
Nourish your gut microbiome.
Research and address your dental health.
Address underlying causes rather than suppressing symptoms.
Don’t put toxins into your system - cigarettes, excess alcohol, recreational drugs, sugars etc. Confront and handle addictions and regularly detox.
Attend to your spiritual health (often overlooked in the cult of the body). Confronting the sources of stress is a part of this - if you can do something about it, it becomes less stressful!
Get fresh air, fresh water and exercise in Nature. The rejuvenating powers of Nature are well-documented in the medical literature - whether it is walking in forests or swimming in rivers and oceans. Mother Nature or God, depending on your spiritual outlook, has provided some amazing tools to keep us healthy in the way of herbs that keep coming to the rescue in these challenging times.
Take some time for fun and relaxation each week. This is especially important if you work hard.
