Proofing Yourself Up Against Illness

There is no better time than the present to proof up your body against illness. To “proof your body up”  means to render it less susceptible to illness, whether the challenges come from inside or outside your body. Examples of challenges that come from within include reactivation of previously sleeping infections like shingles and Epstein Barr Virus. Examples of challenges from outside the body include exposures to toxins of all kinds, pesticides, chemicals in foods etc.

Our environment has become full of potential challenges to our health over the last few years.  These challenges include: viruses, bacterial and mould infections, increased radiation, increased chemicals, metals and food contamination. Add a large dollop of economic and other major stressors and you have a population that needs to wise up, take responsibility and work hard to survive well. Gone are the days when you can simply leave your wellbeing to the “Experts.”

Here are 12 steps you can take to give yourself the best chance of not only surviving any coming challenges but surviving well! These are pillars of Functional Medicine.

1.Clean eating/drinking: For my patients this means avoidance of gluten, cows’ dairy and refined sugars and real foods eating plan tailored to their unique biochemical needs.

2.Good blood sugar control: The Standard Western Diet and societal overindulgence in alcohol push people towards diabetes, other illnesses and premature death.  Breaking addictions may be needed.

3.Adequate deep sleep: Your brain clears itself of debris during deep sleep. Failure to do this predisposes towards Alzheimer’s, other neuro-degenerative diseases and cancers.

4.Reduction of wifi radiation exposure: This is a really big deal as the many relevant scientific papers show. Wifi radiation increases the aggression and length of infections. It is a big factor in mould biotoxin illness. It affects us all. There are steps we can take to reduce harmful exposures.

5.Good dental hygiene: You can’t have a healthy body or immune system if there are infections or metal toxins in your mouth. A poor bite or jaw joint issues can also put your body in a chronic state of stress. Biological dentists are best equipped to diagnose and treat such key issues. Please see iaomt.org (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology website).

6.A healthy immune system: Your immune system is central to your good health. One of the most important lab tests I can recommend is the CD3/57+ cells test. This test tells you if you have enough immune soldiers in your army to defend you successfully against viral and invaders.  I see a lot of people with chronic conditions whose immune soldiers are “missing in action.” Fortunately, we have  tools that can help improve things.

7.Dormant infection load: We all carry a reservoir of infections in our body, depending on past exposures. An example is chicken pox reactivating as shingles. Another example is Epstein Barr Virus (glandular fever) which lives on in the body. But these viruses should be asleep, not awake!  Challenges like heavy metals, chronic stress, lack of sleep, poor food choices, dental infections and environmental toxins change the body’s internal environment so that dormant infections bloom again.T he clinical goal is to fix the internal environment and get infections to go back to sleep.

8.Fix indoor mould/water damage:  Around a quarter of the population has difficulty detoxifying from the kind of mould that results from water damage to buildings. This can make any other infections worse. Cleaning up both home and the body are are essential in this case, as well as future vigilance against mould.

9.Avoid/detoxify from environmental chemicals:  Make your home a safe place to live in by avoiding garden pesticides like glyphosate, chemical air fresheners, chemical personal products. This includes your car too!

10.Take responsibility for your health: The more you know about what you put into your body, the more optimal health choices you will make. You are also less likely to become a burden on an overloaded national healthcare system. The most workable approach to health that I know is Functional and Nutritional Medicine. To learn more about these, please visit ifm.org (Institute of Functional Medicine website).

11.Avoid the “merchants of chaos”: There are certain elements of the media who may be called “merchants of chaos” as they specialise in giving out bad news and ramping up fear. This is bad for your health. Have a news detox for a week and see if you feel better.

12.Stay Cheerful and optimistic:  Your mental outlook has a huge effect on your physical wellbeing. Have you ever felt worse after being round a negative critical person? This impacts significantly on your spiritual wellbeing, which is how you feel, as opposed to your body. Acknowledging the spiritual side of life is very important. For some, this might manifest in renewed joy in getting out in Nature, helping others or following the religion of your choice.
